Biography of Lucy S. Sanders(1821-1910)

Here is a biography of my 3rd Great Aunt Lucy S Sanderson to help fill in some of the missing pieces from the Sanders story.

Lucy S. Sanders(1821-1910)
Birth: July 1st, 1821 in Whately, MA
Father: David Sanderson(1791-1863)
Mother: Amy Wheeler(1793-1874)

Married: Asehel W. Sanderson on February 5th, 1861 in Whately, MA

Children:

Death:  June 18th, 1910 in Northampton, MA

Lucy S. Sanders was born on July 1st, 1821 to David Sanderson and Amy Wheeler in Whately, MA.  She was the second youngest of four children.  The family went by various versions of their surname, including Sanders, Saunders, and Sanderson.  Her father was a mill owner and she lived with her family through 1861. There is a family story that she is involved in the underground railroad, but I have't found anything to collaborate this.

At age 39, she married Asehel W. Sanderson of Whately, MA, the son of Eli Sanderson and Sophia Clark.  The marriage occured on February 5th, 1861.  He was 39 and this was both of their first marriage.  Asehel was a farmer by trade.  Lucy's brother Albert died of fever in 1862 leaving her at least $5,000.  Her father passed away of Consumption on June 1st, 1863 leaving her and her sister each $100 dollars.  He left his wife the bulk of his estate.  Lucy's husband died on September 24th, 1863.  I am unable to read the cause of death from the documents, but am pretty sure it was not Consumption.  He died without a will and Lucy received a widow's pension of $4,000 on January 5th, 1864.

Given all the deaths and that the remaining family was in Northampton, MA, Lucy, her mother, her sister and her sister's children moved to Northampton, MA soon after this.   By 1865, the family has moved to Northampton and Lucy is living with them.  They have a servant, Ellen Sullivan, from Ireland. The family is still together in 1870.  They have a 19 year old servant, Maggie Shannon, from Ireland.  The family seems to be reasonably well off.  Lucy has a personal estate of $5,000 and a Real Estate income of $7,000 and therefore likely owns the house.  On March 13th, 1874, Lucy's mother Amy passed away.

By 1887, Lucy moved to 59 West Street with her sister.  The 1900 census, shows her still living with her sister in the 59 West Street house.  they have a boarder, Amy S. Lane, who is a teacher.  Lucy dies on June 18th, 1910 in Northamton, MA due to complications associated with old age.  She is buried with her husband, brother and sister in the and is buried at the High Street Cemetery in Haydenville, MA.
