Biography of Lydia Edna Kilborne(1814-1898)-S5

Here is a biography of my Second Great Grandmother, Lydia Edna Kilborne.  The link to her parents is a bit tenuous based on the documentation I have available, but it represents the best information I have.

Lydia Edna Kilborne(1814-1898)-S5
Birth: February 9th, 1814 in Tyrington, MA

Father: Daniel Kilborn(1775-1825)
Mother: Lydia Gleason(1779-1856)

Marriage: Edward B. Smith(1815-1863)-S4 on September 11th, 1839 in Tyringham, MA

Children:
  • Homer Smith(1840-1841)
  • Franklin Adelbert Smith(1842-1864)
  • Charles F. Smith(1843-1914)
  • Ezekiel G. Smith(1846-1905)
  • Martha A. Smith(1848-1921)
  • Edward Smith(1849-UNKN)-Questionable
  • Riley C. Smith(1850-1914)
  • Henry Smith(1852-1853)
  • Grove C. Smith(1854-1921)
  • Merrick Luther Smith(1856-1934)-S2
  • Lura M. Smith(1859-1952)
Death: September 10th, 1898 in Lee, MA

Lydia Edna Kilborne was born on February 9th, 1814 in Tyrington, MA.  She was the fifth of five children for Daniel Kilborn and Lydia Gleason.  Lydia's father died around 1825. There is not a lot of documentation on her, until her intentions to marry Edward B. Smith of Lee, MA was announced on August 17th, 1839 and they were married on September 11th, 1839 in Tyringham, MA.  Their first son, Homer Smith, was born on October 15th, 1840 in Lee, MA.  He died on April 17th, 1841.  Thier second son, Franklin Adelbert Smith, was born on April 17th, 1842 in Lee.  Charles F. Smith, their third son, was born on September 29th, 1843.  Followed by Ezekiel G. Smith on February 20, 1846.

Their first daughter, Martha A. Smith, was born on January 25th, 1848 in either Lee or Tyringham.  There is a possibility of a son named Edward being born in 1849 but the only reference I've found to him was the 1850 U.S. Census.  Another son, Riley C. Smith was born on May 25th 1850 in Tyringham.  It is possible that Riley is the Edward referenced in the 1850 census.

The 1850 Census shows the family living in Tyringham, MA with a George and Hannah Kilborne.  George, a laborer,  was 73 and  Hannah was 67.  I do not think these are Lydia's parents but I am sure they are related to her.  Edward is listed as being a laborer.  They had another son, Henry, on June 4th, 1852 who died of consumption on April 10th, 1853.  Another son, Grove C. Smith was born on April 3rd, 1854.

The 1855 State Census shows the family living in Tyringham, MA and Edward working as a Paper Maker. Soon after, the family moved back to Lee where their last son, Merrick Luther Smith, was born on June 6th, 1856.  They had one more daughter, Lura M. Smith, on April 27th, 1859 in Lee.  The 1860 census has the entire family living in Lee and Edward working as a Paper Maker.  He makes about $150 a year.  Lydia's mother died on November 6th, 1856.

On October 10th, 1861, Edward enlisted in the army and was discharged on September 11th, 1862.  Edward died on September 7th, 1863 of Consumption in Lee, MA.  In 1864, her son Franklin died in Tennessee due to wounds received in battle.   The family was still living in Lee, MA 1865.  Lydia, Charles, Ezekiel, Martha, and Riley are all listed as being laborers.  I suspect they work working in paper making.  Grove and Merrick where attending school.  There is no listing for Lura.

The 1870 census shows Lydia keeping house.  Charles and Ezekiel have moved out, leaving Martha and Riley working in Paper Making.  Grove is a farm laborer.  Merrick and Lura are attending school.  By 1880, Riley has moved out, Lydia is keeping house, Martha, Grove and Merrick are Paper Makers and Lura is still attending school.

The records from 1890 show that Lydia is living on High Street in Lee, MA.  The 1894 Land Ownership Map shows a Mrs. E. Smith owning a large area at the corner of High Street and Franklin St.  Extending down to Main street. Some of the land has been sold off, but the Main house appears to be still there.

Lydia died on September 10th, 1898 due to exhaustion from intestinal paresis. She is buried in Fairmont Cemetery in Lee, MA.

Biography of Edward B. Smith(1815-1863)-S4

I'm now moving on to Generation 3 of the Smith branch my tree.  Here is a biography of my Second Great Grandfather, Edward B. Smith.  He is one of our Civil War connections.

Edward B. Smith(1815-1863)-S4
Birth: October 2nd, 1815 in Middletown, CT

Father: John Smith(1786-UNKN)
Mother: Sarah Howdle(1783-1836)

Marriage: Lydia Edna Kilborne on September 11th, 1839 in Tyringham, MA

Children:
  • Homer Smith(1840-1841)
  • Franklin Adelbert Smith(1842-1864)
  • Charles F. Smith(1843-1914)
  • Ezekiel G. Smith(1846-1905)
  • Martha A. Smith(1848-1921)
  • Edward Smith(1849-UNKN)-Questionable
  • Riley C. Smith(1850-1914)
  • Henry Smith(1852-1853)
  • Grove C. Smith(1854-1921)
  • Merrick Luther Smith(1856-1934)-S2
  • Lura M. Smith(1859-1952)
Death: September 7th, 1863 in Lee, MA

Edward B. Smith was born on October 2nd, 1815 in Middletown, CT to John Smith and Sarah Howdle.  I don't have any information on other children or a lot about John and Sarah other then that John was a paper maker.  The family had moved to Lee, MA by 1830, probably because of John's profession.  Edward's mother died on December 12th, 1836.

Edward B. Smith and Lydia Edna Kilborne of Tyringham, MA announced their intentions to marry on August 17th, 1839 and were married on September 11th, 1839 in Tyringham, MA.

On October 10th, 1861, Edward enlisted in Company E of the 27th Massachusetts Infantry as a Private.  Certain documents have him listed as being an Operative, AKA a spy, for the union.  The regiment was directed south to Annapolis, MD for 2 months and then transferred to North Carolina.  Edward likely participated in the Battle of Roanoke Island on February 7th and 8th, 1862 and the Battle of New Bern on March 14th, 1862.

Edward was discharged on September 11th, 1862.  The regiment had signed up for three years of service and, given the short time period of Edward's service, I suspect Edward was discharged for medical reasons.  Edward died on September 7th, 1863 of Consumption in Lee, MA.  I have not been able to find his grave site, but suspect it might be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Lee, MA along side his wife.

Article on John Francis Carey(1869-1954)

Danville, IL Commercial-News Sunday March 29th, 1936

ITS Conductor Has Served for 32 Years On Interurban Line Soon to Be Abandoned

John Carey on Duty on Danville-Westville Run Since it Started

Hopes to Get Job on Batestown Car When Present Assignment Ends

by Fay Fielding
Commercial-News Staff Writer

Thirty two years continuous service as a conductor and motorman on the same interurban line.

That is the remarkable record of John Carey, veteran employee of Illinois Terminal Railway System, one of the transportation lines of Illinois Power and Light Corporation.

Every day since 1904 when the line was opened, except for a few brief periods when he was off duty because of illness or on vacation, he has been on duty, for several years a conductor, and later when the "one-man" cars were placed in service, as both conductor and motorman on the Westville line.

On City Lines Year

This line will be abandoned in the near future - probably during the next two or three weeks.  While abandonment of the line will end the long record by the veteran employee, it will not end his career as an interurban trainman. He has put in a "bid" for a run on the Batestown line and indications are he will get it.  He was employed on the city lines one year before being assigned to the Danville-Westville line.

In 1884 Mr. Carey came to Danville from Delpi, Ind., where he was born.  At the age of 11 got a job as water boy on a C.&E. I.  work train. Four years later the train was pulled out of service and John was pulled off his job.  He wanted to be a breakman. Attired in a suit with padded shoulders and oversized trousers, made for him by a Danville tailor named Bowen, and a tall derby hat, known in those days as a "stiff Katy," he wen to the train master's office in Chicago and applied for a job.

"You look pretty young; how old are you?" asked the trainmaster.

John, with most of his body concealed by the trainmaster's desk, raised himself upon his toes, puffed out his chest and replied, "21."

He was given a letter to Billy Stephens, general yardmaster here, who was instructed to give him a job. Several days later, a 1 o'clock in the morning, he was called out for his first run. He railroaded until the strike of 1894 when he went to Helena, Mont., and worked in a smelting plant, later going to Anaconda, Mont., where he landed his first street car job.

Early in 1903, when work was firsts tarted on electric railway lines out of Danville, he received from his sister, Miss Mamie Carey of Danville, a copy of The Commercial-News. On the front page was a story about the new interurban lines - both those in construction and under consideration. Accompanying the story was a picture of a wheel, with Danville as the hub and the spokes pointing to various cities that would be connected with the city if the proposed electric lines were built.

Carey decided to return to Danville and apply for a job on one of the interurban lines. He got one shortly after he arrived but it was on the city lines. A year later, however, he landed a job as conductor on an interurban car.  He was assigned the Westville line and has been there ever since.

Romance on Trolley

Carey is the father of eight chilren and owns a nice home at 615 Douglas Avenue.  All of his children except one who is recently married live at home.  They are Joseph, Johnnie, Winifred, Mary Helen, Marjorie, Loretta, William and Thomas.  Three of his sons, Tom, William and Johnny, have been carriers for the Commercial-News. Mrs. Carey was Miss Rosa Whipple, member of a pioneer family living east of Georgetown. The romance that culminated in their marriage began on the interurban car on which Mr. Carey began his career as conductor.

A few years ago John took his family for a ride on his car, and this is what Grace Gallaher, local correspondent for an IPL Magazine, wrote about it:

"When John Carey takes his family out for an airing he spurns an automobile and trailer, and loads them all into an interurban car. This carful of care-free Careys has made a careful Carey out of John. He has to watch his step with a brood like this, but they have kept him young, and after many years of railroading he is still able to 'Carey' on."

Biography of Charles Championette Putnam(1843-1863)

Charles Championette Putnam was one of Levi Houlton Putnam's brothers and my third great uncle.  My brother and I were talking about him and I thought I would put together what we know of his short life and his service in the Civil War.  Here is his brief biography.

Charles Championette Putnam(1843-1863)
Birth: November 24th, 1843 in Houlton, ME
Father: Amos Putnam(1794-1849)-P8

On June 19th, 1863, Companies M and E, commanded by Captain Brown and Lieut. Ellis, were sent into the woods at the left of the pike, beyond which was an open field, and charged across this field to a stone wall, where they met the enemy, and a severe fight ensued, resulting in a victory for the Maine boys. Sergeant Charles C. Putnam, guidon bearer of Company E, was shot and killed within twelve feet of the wall.

His service pistol was sent back to his mother and it has been passed down in the family.  I haven't been able to locate his grave site, but suspect he was buried near where he fell.  My brother found this Go Fund Me page for placing a monument to those who fell as part of the 1st Maine Calvary at the beginning of the Gettysburg campaign.

So what did I learn from all the different Sanders Posts

There was a lot there, but did they answer any of the outstanding questions.  Here is what i can say:

  • The early part of the 1860s was rough on the family.  Benjamin Franklin Reed ran off, David Sanderson, Albert David Sanders and  Asahel Sanderson all died.  This left Amy Wheeler and Lucy S Sanders as widows, Sarah raising her children without their father, and Lucy Amy Reed Sanders an orphan.  If it wasn't for Albert David Sanders money, things could have been much worst.  Surprisingly, none of these events seems to be directly tied to the Civil War.
  • Albert David Sanders married Jane Tileston, Not Lilly Lawrence.  Lilly Lawrence was actually Lucy Amy Reed Sanders.  Daughter of Sarah Sanders and adopted daughter of Albert David Sanders.  Lucy was known as Lilly and married John Lawrence.
  • Still don't know where Benjamin Franklin Reed went.  We know he started in New York, but I can't validate anything about him becoming a missionary to the Native American's in the south.  Also, there is no evidence of Albert David Reed Sanders retrieving him and him dying in the Northampton area and there is no sign of his grave.  I have also found no evidence of Benjamin Franklin Reed having other children.
  • Albert David Reed Sanders was not adopted by Albert David Sanders, though he did receive $1000 from his uncle.  He changed his name to honor his uncle, but this was when he was 17 or 18 and well after his uncle's death.

Biography of Albert David Reed Sanders(1852-1947)

Albert's biography with be the last of this generations of Sanders I plan to do.  He was my Second Great Uncle.  HE appears to have moved around a bit, but I think I have made the proper connects.

Albert David Reed Sanders(1852-1947)
Birth: October 17th, 1852 in Whately, MA
Father: Benjamin Franklin Reed(1819-UNKN)
Mother: Sarah Wheeler Sanders(1823-1919)

Married: Rebecca Clark Strong(1854-1935) on October 8th, 1874 in Northampton, MA

Children:
Albert David Sanders(1879-1949)
Amy Sanders(1887-1973)
Ruth Sanders(1891-1964)

Death:  October 15th, 1947 in Peterborough, NH

Albert David Reed was born on October 17th, 1852  in Whately, MA to Benjamin Franklin Reed and Sarah Wheeler Sanders.  He was the forth of four children. He lived with his father, mother and sister Sarah until his father abandoned the family in 1863.  His uncle Albert David Sanders died in 1862 and left him $1000.  His mother had the family move to Northampton, MA in 1864.  On April 7th, 1869 he officially changed his name to Albert David Sanders.  The legal records say he wanted to have the full name of his uncle, but I suspect it was also because he was ashamed of the Reed name.  He was working as a clerk at the time.  The 1870 census has him at school, so I wounder if he was working while attending school.  He married Rebecca Clark Strong(1854-1935) on October 8th, 1874 in Northampton, MA.  She was the daughter of Eben S Strong and Rebecca Clark.

Their first child, Albert David Sanders(1879-1949) was born on February 27th, 1879 in Easthampton, MA.  The 1880 census shows Albert living in Easthampton, MA and working as a Bank Cashier.  Their second child, Amy Sanders(1887-1973) was born on February 13th, 1887 in Massachusetts.  Soon afterwards, the family moved to Illinois.  Their last child, Ruth Sanders(1891-1964) was born on March 25th, 1891 in Illinois.

By 1900, the family was living at 2 Benson Ave in Evenston, IL.  Albert was the manager of a Plumber supply company.  In 1910, they were living at 1227 Elmwood Ave. Evenston, IL.  By 1920, he had moved back to Easthampton, MA.  He was working as a Real Estate Insurance Agent and living at 167 Main St.  By 1930, he was back in Evanston, IL living with his daughter Amy at 1416 Hinman Ave and working as a Life Insurance Broker.

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s he continues to work in insurance and is the President of the Sanders-Forbes Corp.  His wife died in 1935 in Northampton, MA.  He also seems to spend part of the year in Florida.  The 1940 census says he was a guest at the Villa Dora Hotel in Mount Dora, Florida in both 1935 and 1940.  He died on October 15th, 1947 after spending 2 hours at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH. He is buried at the Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton, MA

Biography of Lucy Amy Reed Sanders(1848-1918)

Lucy is my Second Great Aunt by birth and First Cousin, Three times removed, by adoption.

Lucy Amy Reed Sanders(1848-1918)
Birth: February 5th, 1848 in Whately, MA
Father: Benjamin Franklin Reed(1819-UNKN)
Mother: Sarah Wheeler Sanders(1823-1919)

Adopted Father: Albert David Sanders(1816-1862)
Adopted Mother: Jane Elizabeth Tileston(1820-1861)

Married: John Dresser Lawrence(1847-1907) on May 25th, 1870 in Northampton, MA

Children: None

Death:  1918 in Northampton, MA

Lucy Amy Reed was born on February 5th, 1848 in Whately, MA to Benjamin Franklin Reed and Sarah Wheeler Sanders.  She was the second of four children.  She was adopted by her uncle Albert David Sanders and his wife Jane Elizabeth Tileston soon after her birth and took the name Lucy Amy Sanders Reed..  She was living with her adopted parents in WIlliamsburg, MA in 1850.  The family adopted two more children, Eleanor and Everett Baxter between 1852 and 1855 and they are all living together in 1855 through 1861.  Lucy is sometimes refereed to as Lilly. On December 15th, 1861, Lucy's adopted mother, Jane, passed away of Consumption.  On October 8th, 1862, her adopted father, Albert David died of a fever.

Lucy was left at least $8,000 in the trust of Charles H. Allen of Boston, MA.  I am not sure what happened to her between the 1861 death of her adopted father and her marriage.  She may have stayed in the Northampton area or gone to live with Mr. Allen.  She married John Dresser Lawrence on MAy 25th, 1870 in Northampton, MA.  He was the son of Ithiel Lawrence and Mary Abigail Dresser of Castine, ME.  They start living together in Northampton, MA.  He is in Books and Stationary and has $2,000.  There is no mention of Lucy's money.   In 1873, John is listed as being an Auctioneer and the family is living on West Street.

By 1900, the couple has moved to 2 West St, Pittsfield, MA.  John is working as a Hotel Steward.  The census says that Lucy has lost 2 children though I have found no other record of them.  John dies on July 4th, 1907 in Northampton and Lucy has moved to live with her birth sister Jane, birth mother Sarah, Aunt Lucy and nephews by 1910 at 67 West St, Northampton, MA.  She moved to 23 Crafts Ave by 1915 and to 79 West Street by 1917.  Lucy died in 1918 and is buried with her husband in Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, MA.

Biography of Lucy S. Sanders(1821-1910)

Here is a biography of my 3rd Great Aunt Lucy S Sanderson to help fill in some of the missing pieces from the Sanders story.

Lucy S. Sanders(1821-1910)
Birth: July 1st, 1821 in Whately, MA
Father: David Sanderson(1791-1863)
Mother: Amy Wheeler(1793-1874)

Married: Asehel W. Sanderson on February 5th, 1861 in Whately, MA

Children:

Death:  June 18th, 1910 in Northampton, MA

Lucy S. Sanders was born on July 1st, 1821 to David Sanderson and Amy Wheeler in Whately, MA.  She was the second youngest of four children.  The family went by various versions of their surname, including Sanders, Saunders, and Sanderson.  Her father was a mill owner and she lived with her family through 1861. There is a family story that she is involved in the underground railroad, but I have't found anything to collaborate this.

At age 39, she married Asehel W. Sanderson of Whately, MA, the son of Eli Sanderson and Sophia Clark.  The marriage occured on February 5th, 1861.  He was 39 and this was both of their first marriage.  Asehel was a farmer by trade.  Lucy's brother Albert died of fever in 1862 leaving her at least $5,000.  Her father passed away of Consumption on June 1st, 1863 leaving her and her sister each $100 dollars.  He left his wife the bulk of his estate.  Lucy's husband died on September 24th, 1863.  I am unable to read the cause of death from the documents, but am pretty sure it was not Consumption.  He died without a will and Lucy received a widow's pension of $4,000 on January 5th, 1864.

Given all the deaths and that the remaining family was in Northampton, MA, Lucy, her mother, her sister and her sister's children moved to Northampton, MA soon after this.   By 1865, the family has moved to Northampton and Lucy is living with them.  They have a servant, Ellen Sullivan, from Ireland. The family is still together in 1870.  They have a 19 year old servant, Maggie Shannon, from Ireland.  The family seems to be reasonably well off.  Lucy has a personal estate of $5,000 and a Real Estate income of $7,000 and therefore likely owns the house.  On March 13th, 1874, Lucy's mother Amy passed away.

By 1887, Lucy moved to 59 West Street with her sister.  The 1900 census, shows her still living with her sister in the 59 West Street house.  they have a boarder, Amy S. Lane, who is a teacher.  Lucy dies on June 18th, 1910 in Northamton, MA due to complications associated with old age.  She is buried with her husband, brother and sister in the and is buried at the High Street Cemetery in Haydenville, MA.

More on Albert David Sanders

I found the following text and more in a handout of the website for the Society of Industrial Archaeology.

"Mr. Sanders, a native of Whately, was for several years a clerk in the drug store of J.P. Williston,
in Northampton. He went to Haydenville in January, 1838, and on the opening of the
store of J. & J. Hayden in November of that year, he took charge of their mercantile business. In
the meantime he was employed as a clerk by Joel Hayden. He remained as principal manager of
the mercantile business, several years, when he was transferred to the head of the financial department
of the button works, and in 1846 joined Mr. Hayden in the manufacturing. In 1858, he
was chosen to the Legislature from the 2d Representative District, but resigned that position at
the close of the regular session, on account of pressing business engagements. He is accounted
one of the most prudent and successful financial managers in Hampshire county."
