It's Armistice Day

One hundred years ago today (well, actually last night my time) the Armistice was signed that ended World War I. Both my Grandfathers took part in World War I.  David Sanders Wright spent the war in England, and I don't know much about his time there.  At some point, I'll request his records to see if I can piece things together.  Ervin Earl Putnam was in the Army Medical Services as an X-Ray technician. My brother and I have spent time transcribing his diary of his time in France.

I took a bit of time today and walked over to a memorial to the Army Medical Service that is located on the old Fitzsimmon's Army Hospital.

Biography of Asa Wright(1818-1883)-W4

Asa Wright(1818-1883)-W4
Birth: August 22nd, 1818 in Northampton, MA
Father: Joseph Wright(1778-1825)
Mother: Charlotte Dawes(1786-1846)
Married: Married Harriet Clark(1822-1894) on October 21st, 1845 in Northampton, MA
Children:
Francis Clark Wright(1849-1850)
David Joy Wright(1851-1908)
Charles Blake Wright(1855-1939)

Death:  May 11th, 1883 in Northampton, MA

According to the Massachusetts Town and Vital Records, Asa Wright was born on August 22nd, 1818 in Northampton, MA.  There is an alternate date of August 23rd, 1819 on his grave site.  He was the 4th child (of Joseph Wright and Charlotte Dawes.   The 1820 census shows him living with his parents in Northampton.  His father died in 1825, and the 1830 census shows Asa living with his mother, 2 brothers and a sister.

Asa married Harriet Clark on October 21st, 1845 in Northampton, MA.  His mother passed away in 1846.  Their first child, Francis Clark Wright, was born on April 15th, 1849 in Williamsburg, MA and died almost a year later =on April 8th, 1850.  The 1850 census shows Asa living with his wife in Northampton and working as a farmer.

Their second son, David Joy Wright was born on February 9th, 1851 in Northampton, MA. Their youngest child, Charles Black Wright was born on June 27th, 1855 in Northampton, MA and the 1860 census shows the family living together and Asa still working as a farmer. The 1865 Massachusetts census has Asa living with his wife and youngest son.  There is no sign of David Joy.

The family is all together again in 1870.  Asa is still working as a farmer.  His personal estate is worth $5000 and his real estate is $3000.  This 1873 Land ownership map shows where he was living at the time.  I believe the property would have been located at what is now the corner of Laurel St and Grove St. The 1880 census lists Asa living with his wife, son David and David's wife, Jane Caroline Reed.  He is now a farmer for the Northampton Lunatic Hospital.  There is a possibility that he is living at the farmhouse on hospital property at what is now Village Hill Road and West Street.

By 1880, he was still working as a farmer, but living at 19 West St. with his son and daughter-in-law.  He died on May 11th, 1882 of an epileptic coma in Northampton, MA.  He is buried at Bridge Street Cemetery.

Rosa Amelia Whipple(1886-1960)-CR3
Birth: September 22nd, 1886 in Georgetown, IL
Father: Andrew Jackson Whipple(1847-1924)
Mother: Melinda Hannah Mitchell(1846-1916)

Married: Married John Francis Carey (1869-1954) on February 25th, 1905 in Westville, IL
Children:
Loretta Carey(1907-1995)
Thomas M Carey(1909-1995)
Marjorie A Carey(1911-1971)
William Vincent Carey(1914-1996)
John Francis Carey(1916-2000)
Mary Helen Carey(1919-2009)
Winifred Carey(1921-2016)
Joseph Edward Carey(1925-2009)
Michel Carey(1927-1927)

Death:  September 29th, 1960 in Danville, IL

Rosa Amelia Whipple was born on September 22nd, 1886 likely in Georgetown, IL.  She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Whipple and Melinda Hannah Mitchell and was the 9th of 11 children.  At age 13, in 1900, she is living with her parents and 7 siblings in Highland, IN.  The census says she could read and write.

she married John Francis Carey on February 25th, 1905 in Westville, IL.  Their first child, Loretta Carey(1907-1995) was born in 1907 and Thomas M. Carey(1909-1995) was born on May 23rd, 1909.  By 1910, Rosa Amelia was living with her husband and 2 children on Clark Street in Georgetown, IL.  Their second daughter, Marjorie A Carey(1911-1971) was born on September 26th, 1911 and their second son, William Vincent Carey(1914-1996) was born on March 15th, 1914.  Margaret became Nun and changed her name to Rose Amelia.  William became a Priest.

The family moved to Danville, IL, where John Francis Carey was born on February 8th, 1916.  Mary Helen Carey was born on March 18th, 1919.  The 1920 census has the family living at 615 Douglas Ave, Danville, IL.  They own the house without a mortgage and Rosa Amelia lived here until her death.

The 1930 census shows the entire family listed as living at 615 Douglas Avenue as well as someone named Gaston Charles.  Gaston was 62, from France, and listed as possibly being John Francis's father.  I highly doubt this, and suspect he was just a lodger. In 1940, the family is still at the Douglas Street address.  It includes Rosa, his husband and their children, William, Mary Helen, Winifred and Joseph.  Mary Helen seems to be the only one working in the household.  She is listed as being a teacher in the public schools. Rosa Amelia Whipple died on September 29th, 1960 in Danville. IL.  She is buried in Resurrection Cemetery.

Birth: April 7th, 1869 in Delphi, Indiana
Father: Michael Carey(1840-1900?)
Mother: Bridget Thornton(1845-1923)

Married: Married Rosa Amelia Whipple(1886-1960) on February 25th, 1905 in Westville, IL
Children:

Mary Helen Carey(1919-2009)
Winifred Carey(1921-2016)
Joseph Edward Carey(1925-2009)
Michel Carey(1927-1927)

Death: July 15thth, 1954 in Danville, Illinois

John Francis Carey was born on April 27th, 1869 in Delphi, Indiana to Michael Carey and Bridget Thornton.  He was the 2nd of 4 children.  In 1870, he was living in Delphi with his parents and older brother.  By 1880, his father seems to have left the family and John Francis is living with his mother, brother and two sisters.  Though I hope to find a trace of Michael, this is where I loss track of him.

Sometime between 1880 and 1905 John Francis left home.  I know from a latter census that his only completed 3rd grade and this census shows him as being at home, instead of at school.  I have found a John Carey in the 1900 Census living as a boarder in Lewis and Clark Montana and working as a laborer and smelter.  If this is him, I suspect it had something to do with the railroad.  I couple of items point to it being him, namely the birth month/year (April 1969) and birth location (Indiana).  On the other side, the parents are both listed as being from New York instead of Ireland.

He married Rosa Amelia Whipple on February 25th, 1905 in Westville, IL.  Their first child, Loretta Carey(1907-1995) was born in 1907 and Thomas M. Carey(1909-1995) was born on May 23rd, 1909.  By 1910, John Francis was living with his wife and 2 children on Clark Street in Georgetown, IL.  He is working as a Street Car Conductor and owns his house with a mortgage.  The census says he can read and write.

They own the house without a mortgage and John Francis Sr lived here until his death.   He is a conductor on the traction line.  Given information from the City Directories, this was for the Illinois Traction System.  He worked as a conductor until some point in the 1930s when he stopped working.

The 1930 census shows him still owning the house which is now worth $1500. The entire family is listed as living there as well as someone named Gaston Charles.  Gaston was 62, from France, and listed as possibly being John Francis's father.  I highly doubt this, and suspect he was just a lodger. In 1940, the family is still at the Douglas Street address.  It includes John Francis, his wife Rosa and their children, William, Mary Helen, Winifred and Joseph.  Mary Helen seems to be the only one working in the household.  She is listed as being a teacher in the public schools. John Francis Carey died on July 15th, 1954 in Danville. IL.  He is buried in Resurrection Cemetery.

Biography of John Francis Carey(1916-2000)-CR1

I'm jumping off track and doing a bit of work on my wife's side of the family.  This is all based on the records I have found.  I would love to hear any additional information people have.

John Francis Carey(1916-2000)
Birth: February 8th, 1916 in Danville, Illinois
Father: John Francis Carey(1869-1954)
Mother: Rosa Amelia Whipple(1886-1960)

Married: Married Georgeana Orr in Marion, Indiana

Children:
Living Son(1939-Living)
Living Son(1941-Living)
Dennis Michael Carey(1943-2000)

John Francis Carey was born on February 8th, 1916 in Danville, IL to John Francis Carey and Rosa Amelia Whipple.  He was the 5th of nine children.  The 1920 U.S. Census shows him living with his father, mother and five of his siblings at 615 Douglas Ave,  Danville, IL.   The family still lived at this address but now show 8 children in the house.

On June 26th,1937, John Francis married Georgeana Orr at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Marion, IN and moved to Marion. He was working as an Inspector at the Marion Malleable iron works in 1938 and living at 2717 S. Boots Street.

Married: Married Peter Weatherby(1836-1914) on October 4th, 1861 in Lot 49, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Michael Weatherby(1872-1903)
Margaret Elizabeth Weatherby(1876-UNKN)
William Augustus Weatherby(1879-UNKN)
Frances Bernand Weatherby(1883-UNKN)

Death: About 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Louisa Carver was born on May 4th, 1837 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Joseph Carver and Catherine Cummings.  She was the third of five children.  She was baptized Roman Catholic on  June 8th, 1837 at St. Dunstan's Basilica by James F. Morris.  She married Peter Weatherby(1836-1914) on October 4th, 1861 in Lot 49, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Their first child, Mary Ann Weatherby, was born on September 8th, 1862 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.  And the family lived in Charlottetown until Louisa's death.  Their second child, Catherine J. Weatherby, was born on January 26th, 1864. Their first  son, John Thomas Weatherby was born on August 19th, 1867.  Their second son, Peter Weatherby was born on June 29th, 1870.  He was followed by Michael Weatherby on April 22nd, 1872.

Margaret Elizabeth Weatherby was born on October 17th, 1876.  She is not listed in the 1881 census, so likely died before 1881.  William Augustus Weatherby was born on June 30th, 1879.  The 1881 census shows Louisa living with her husband, and some of his children, namely Catherine, John Thomas, Peter, Michael and William.  Mary Ann would have been around 19 and may have moved out, though she didn't get married until 1887.  The entire family are listed as Roman Catholic except her husband, who was a Wesleyan Methodist.

Their last child, Frances Bernard Weatherby was born on March 24th, 1883.  In 1888, Peter is listed in the city index as living at 20 Clark.  In 1890, the city index shows him as living on Palmer's Lane.   All the evidance supports Louisa still living with him.  The 1891 has Louisa living with her husband and John, Peter, Michael, William and Frances.  Peter is listed as being a member of the Free Church His profession is doing something with coal, which I can't fully decipher and a laborer.  His sons John and Peter are listed as being a fisherman and a painter, respectively.  There is a 1 year old child named Mary listed as being a lodger.

Approximate location of 20 Clark Street.

The 1901 census has Louisa and Peter living with their sons John, Peter, William and Francis.  Peter Senior is listed as being a laborer and having an annual income of $100.  John is also a laborer, but doesn't show any income.  Peter is a painter, making about $200 a year.  William is a sailor, making $350 a year, and Francis is a painter, making $150 a year from painting and $150 a year from other jobs.  None of them worked the entire year and between them they brought in $950 the previous year.  There is also a girl, Mary A., listed as being Peter Seniors daughter.  Given that she is age 11 I find this to be highly unlikely and is more likely Louisa's granddaughter.  She is probably the same Mary listed as a lodger in the 1891 census.  They also have a 7 month old boarder named John C. Monoghan living with them.

By 1911, she is living with husband and granddaughter Annie, age 8.  Louisa died about 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Limited Biography of Joanna I Eagan(1837-UNKN)-C5

I have even less on James Connolly's wife.  But here it is.

Joanna Eagan(1837-UNKN)-C5
Birth: October 24th, 1837 in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada
Father: Patrick Eagan(1810-1891)-C10
Mother: Mary McDonald(UNKN-UNKN)-C11
Married: Married Frank James C. Connoly(1837-1891)-C4 before 1859
Children:
Frederick Patrick Connolly(1859-1921)
James Connolly(1864-UNKN)
Henrietta Connolly(1866-UNKN)
Frank Connolly(1870-UNKN)
Mary Connolly(1873-UNKN)
John Thomas Connolly(1875-UNKN)

Death: UNKN
Joaana I Eagan was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Patrick Eagan and Mary McDonald.  She married James C Connoly before 1859 and had six children while living in Charlottestown, Prince Edwards Island, Canada.  Their first son, Frederick Patrick Connolly was born on June 4th, 1864.  He was followed by James Connolly in 1866, Henrietta Connolly on June 22nd, 1866, Mary Connolly in 1873, Frank Connolly in 1870, Mary Connolly in 1873,  and John Thomas Connolly in 1875.  Given that all the baptisms occurred in in either St Andrews Church or St. Dunstan's Basillica, it is likely the family were Irish Catholics. I have no information on her death or burial location.

Limited Biography of James C. Connolly(1837-1891)-C4

Alright, I have a habit of following rabbit holes when I'm pulling things together.  If I don't feel I have enough information on a person, I tend to keep searching and it keeps me from moving on.  The Canadian Connolly, Eagan, Weatherby and Carver branches of my Putnam side are examples of this.  The information I have is spotty, and I am not completely sure all of it is right.  I need to just post on them so I can move on.  I suspect I will need to get more familiar with Prince Edward Island genealogy before I can really close these mysteries.  If anyone has better information on these lines, I'd love the help.  So I'll start with James Connolly, my Great Great Grandfather.

James C. Connolly(1837-1891)-C4
Birth: December 25th, 1837 in Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island, Canada
Father: Thomas Connolly(1791-1872)-C8

Married: Married Frank Joanna I. Eagan(1837-UNKN)-C5 before 1859
Children:
Frederick Patrick Connolly(1859-1921)
James Connolly(1864-UNKN)
Henrietta Connolly(1866-UNKN)
Frank Connolly(1870-UNKN)
Mary Connolly(1873-UNKN)
John Thomas Connolly(1875-UNKN)

Death: 1891

James C. Connolly was born on December 25th, 1837 to Thomas Connolly and Henretta Affleck In Mount Stewart, Prince Edward, Island Canada.  He married Joanna I. Eagan and had
six children while living in Charlottestown, Prince Edwards Island, Canada. James C. Connolly died around 1891.  We have no information on his burial location.
