A TERRIFIC HAIL STORM IN NORTHAMPTON YESTERDAY

This was clipped out of the newspaper by one of the Wright family, but they didn't include the date.  Has no real baring on genealogy but I thought I would transcribe it.

 A TERRIFIC HAIL STORM IN NORTHAMPTON YESTERDAY-Yesterday afternoon a little before three o'clock, a terrific hall storm accompanied by vivid lightning and heavy thunder passed over Northampton. Fortunately but little wind prevailed at the time and the hailstones fell with only a slight variation from the perpendicular. Had it been otherwise windows and blinds on the windward side of buildings must have suffered total destruction. For some time before the tempest burst upon us in its fury, an ominous roaring in the direction of the approaching cloud, indicated that hail were to be apprehended. A darkness almost like that of night overshadowed the landscape, and as the tempest, bore down from the hills into the valley, a gust of wind lashed the dust in the streets and plowed fields into smudder which filled the air like a fog. Before the advent of the hail however, the wind had a great measure subsided, and for some minutes after the hail commenced to fall only now and then a solitary stone made its appearance.  The first one observed by us struck in the road fronting our office and was larger than the largest sized hen's egg.

Thus far it had rained but a trifle, and we could hardly believe it to be a hail stone that we saw in the street, but soon a succession of others dispersed all doubts.  For the succeeding ten minutes the scene presented was equally grand and terrible.  Hailstones, solid, compact, round as an apple, and larger than any goose egg, measuring eight nine and often ten inches in circumference, came hissing through the air, bounding from the roofs pf buildings, clipping leaves and small branches from trees, and creating a din in their collision with the objects against which they struck that fairly drowned the thunder by which the tempest was accompanied.  Many of the larger ones either bounded to the height of a man's head when the fell, or crushed to powder, such was the velocity with which they were hurled from the back bosom of the cloud.

The quantity of hail that fell during the storm was not so large as often marks the passage of such tempests through this latitude; but the average size exceeded that of any similar storm in this vicinity, within the memory of the oldest inhabitant.

Death: June 17th, 1830 on Northampton, MA

Anna Francis Warren was born to Mather Warren and Esther Hart on December 30th, 1781 in Williamsburg, MA.  She was the eighth of ten children.  her father died in 1809 in Williamsburg, when Anna was 26 years old.  She is listed as being a member of the Williamsburg Methodist Episcopal Church. and lived on Mountain St.

     

On September 25th, 1808, Anna married James Clark in Williamsburg, MA.  He was the son of Ezra Clark and Sarah Howe and is listed as being from Northampton.  Their first child, Frances Clark was born in 1815.  They had a second child, Jonas Warren Clark in December 1820 in Northampton.  He eventually moved to Portland, ME.  Their last child, Harriet Mills Clark was born on December 17th, 1822 in Northampton.  

Anna died on June 17th, 1830 at age 48.   She is buried in Bridge Street Cemetery.

Biography of James Clark(1780-1848)-W10

 

I a bit hesitant on the next two biographies as there is not as much supporting documentation as I would like.  These links do have some DNA matches, which does help support them.  So here goes.

James Clark(1780-1848)-W10

Birth: September 30th, 1780 in Willaimsburg, MA

Death: April 18th, 1848 on Northampton, MA

James Clark was born on September 30th, 1780 to Ezra Clark and Sarah Howe in Williamsburg, MA.  I have seen one entry saying he was born in Belchertown, MA, but can not validate this.  He was the second of seven children.  His father died in 1805 in WIlliamsburg, when James was 24 years old.  At some point before 1808, James moved to Northampton.

On September 25th, 1808, James married Anna Francis Warren in Williamsburg, MA.  She was the daughter of Mather Warren and Esther Hart.  Their first child, Frances Clark was born in 1815.  They had a second child, Jonas Warren Clark in December 1820 in Northampton.  He eventually moved to Portland, ME.  Their last child, Harriet Mills Clark was born on December 17th, 1822 in Northampton.  

Anna died on June 17th, 1830 and James passed away on April 18th, 1848.  He was listed as being a 68 year old farmer who died of fits.  He is buried in Bridge Street Cemetery.

Charlotte Dawes birth record

Charlotte Dawes was born on March 18th, 1786 in Boston, MA.  There is no record of her parents.  She first appears in documents when she married Joseph Wright on April 15th, 1813 in Westfield, MA when she was 34 years old.  They were married by the Justice of the Peace, Samuel Fowler.

Their first child, Elizabeth was born on December 2nd, 1813 in Northampton, MA.  They lost a child at birth on April 22nd, 1815.  The lost another child in December of 1816.  She was born on December 9th and died on December 11th. Their first son, Joseph was born on February 27th, 1817 followed by Asa on August 22, 1818.

The 1820 U.S. Census shows Joseph living in Northampton, MA.  This census only lists the number of people living with him an not who they are, but there is something of a mystery here.  Joseph is listed as working in Manufacturing,

They had another daughter, Fanny Fowler on December 3rd, 1821. Their last child was born on April 12th, 1823.  He was either called Orrin or Orange.  Her husband, Joseph, died on July 6th, 1825.

The 1830 U.S. Census has Charlotte living with her family.  Like the 1820 census, it does not list names.

Charlotte died on May 17th, 1846 in Northampton, MA.  She is buried n Bridge Street Cemetery.

The Mystery

Charlotte represents a long standing family mystery.  Who was she and who was her parents? Here are some clues I've seen in the data, but I haven't been able to connect the dots.

• Charlotte was 27 when she got married to Joseph
• They were married by Samuel Fowler, a Justice of the Peace
• They named one of their daughter Fanny Fowler
• Some of the probate records list Charlotte as being named Fannie.
• She is listed as being born in Boston, but was married in Westfield

So here are the questions I've been pondering, some could be red herrings:

• Since she was married at 27, could she have been married before?
• Why were they married by a Justice of a Peace?
• What is her connection to Samuel Fowler?
• Could her name have been Frannie or Frances?  Possibly a middlename?
• How did she get from Boston to Westfield?

Joseph was born on August 28th, 1778 in Northampton, MA to Asa Wright and Ester Wright.  He was the 9th of 13 children.  Other records list his birth date as December 13th, 1778. His father died in 1789, when Joseph was 8 years old.  He married Charlotte Dawes on April 15th, 1813 in Westfield, MA when he was 34 years old.  They were married by the Justice of the Peace, Samuel Fowler.

Their first child, Elizabeth was born on December 2nd, 1813 in Northampton, MA.  They lost a child at birth on April 22nd, 1815.  The lost another child in December of 1816.  She was born on December 9th and died on December 11th. Joseph died on July 6th, 1825 at age 46 in Northampton, MA.  The oldest of his children would have been 11 years old and the youngest 2.  He was buried in Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton, MA.

Biography of Sarah Wheeler Sanders(1823-1919)-W7

Thinks are a bit confusing with the Reed-Sanders line.  There was some sort of scandal as will become more clear with the biographies.  I am Starting with Sarah Wheeler Sanders as I think this will help so the implications of the scandal.

Married: Married Married Benjamin Franklin Reed(1819-UNKN) on February 26th, 1845 in Whately, MA

Death:  February 13th, 1919 in Northampton, MA

Sarah Wheeler Sanders was born on April 6th, 1823 to David Sanderson and Amy Wheeler in Whately, MA.  She was the youngest of four children.  The family went by various versions of their surname, including Sanders, Saunders, and Sanderson.  Her father was a mill owner and she lived with her family through 1840.
She married Benjamin Franklin Reed on February 26th, 1845 in Whately, MA.  They were married in the Congregational Church by Jonathan Judd.   Benjamin moved into her parents house and there are mill records showing that Benjamin purchased supplies off of David Sanders.  Their first daughter, Jane Caroline, was born on February 12th, 1846 and their second, Lucy Amy Reed was born on February 5th, 1848.  The 1850 census shows Sarah, Benjamin, and Jane all living with Sarah's parents and sister, Lucy.  There is no listing for Lucy Amy.

They had another girl in 1850, Mary W..  I suspect the W stood for Wheeler but have no proof.  She died on November 3rd, 1852.  Their last child, Albert David was born on October 17th, 1852.  The 1855 State census has the family still living with Sarah's parents and sister.  The family has an Irish maid named Mary Grace, age 24.  Once again, there is no listing for Lucy Amy.

Sarah is still living with her parents, sister, husband and children in 1860.  There is still no record of Lucy Amy.  They have a 22 year old maid from England named Sarah Barrett living with them.  Sometime after this, her husband vanished.  The last record we have of him is a civil war draft registration showing that he is in New York in 1863.

Her father, David Sanderson, dies on June 1st, 1863. In 1864, Sarah is dismissed from the 2nd Church in Whately.  It may be that this has to do with her move to Northampton, or the church may have been disbanded.    By 1865, the family has moved to Northampton and Sarah is living with her mother, sister, Jane and Albert.  They have a different servant, Ellen Sullivan, from Ireland.  At this point, Sarah is listed as being a widow and this is status remains in the records until the 1900 census.  She joins the Edward's Church on February 25th, 1866.


The family is still together in 1870.  They have a 19 year old servant, Maggie Shannon, from Ireland.  The family seems to be reasonably well off.  Sarah's personal income is listed as $2000 and her sister's is $5000.  Lucy also has a Real Estate income of $7000 and therefore likely owns the house.  Ablert has turned 18 and has changed his last name to Sanders from Reed.  In the 1873 city index, Sarah is living at 17 West Street.  She continued living at this house until 1883. On March 13th, 1874, Sarah's mother Amy passed away.  In 1874, her son married and moved to Easthampton, and in 1879, her daughter Jane married and moved out of the house.

By 1887, Sarah moved to 59 West Street with her sister.  Her daughter Jane's family moved into 19 West street.  The 1900 census, shows her living with her sister in the 59 West Street house.  they have a boarder, Amy S. Lane, who is a teacher.  Sarah is listed as being divorced.  Sarah's sister, Lucy, dies in 1910 and Sarah move's in with her daughter Jane at 67 West Street.




Sarah died on February 13th, 1919 in Northampton, MA and is buried at the High Street Cemetery in Haydenville, MA.



Here we move from facts to family story.  The story has it that Benjamin Franklin Reed left Sarah and ran off with a spiritualist.  Eventually he came back and Sarah made him divorce her and make an honest woman out of the spiritualist.    There seems to be some support in the records for this.  Benjamin is know to have gone to New York by 1863 and we loos tract of him.  The records show Sarah listed as a widow after that until 1900, when she is shown as being divorced.  I haven't been able to find the 1880 census record for her.  So, maybe she thought Benjamin was dead after 1863 and found out he was still alive and divorced him by 1890.  It would be worthwhile to find the divorce records  to see if they can tell use more.  David Albert changing his surname to Sanders in 1870 could also be a clue to this scandal or it could be something to do with the money in the Sanders line of the family. There is also a story of a person showing up at the door as another child of Benjamin's and Sarah refusing to meet them. This could mean there is another branch of the Reed family out there but there is no evidence of this.

This whole branch is complicated, so I will likely do separate posts looking into Lucy S. Lucy Amy and David Albert to see if I can glean anymore pieces to the puzzle.

Harriet Mills Clark was born on December 17th, 1822 to James Clarke and Anna Francis Warren in Northampton, MA.  She was the 3rd of 3 children, but there was a 14 year gap between her older brother's birth and her's.  I don't have any information to explain the gap, but feel there would be an interesting story here.  Her mother passed away in 1830.

Harriet expressed her intentions to marry Asa Wright on September 29th, 1845 and married him on October 21st, 1845 in Northampton, MA.  Her father died soon after in 1848.

Harriet and Asa's first child, Francis Clark Wright, was born on April 15th, 1849 in Williamsburg, MA and died almost a year later on April 8th, 1850.  The 1850 census shows Asa living with Harriet in Northampton and working as a farmer.

Their second son, David Joy Wright was born on February 9th, 1851 in Northampton, MA. Their youngest child, Charles Black Wright was born on June 27th, 1855 in Northampton, MA and the 1860 census shows the family living together and Asa still working as a farmer. The 1865 Massachusetts census has Asa living with his wife and youngest son.  There is no sign of David Joy.

The family is all together again in 1870.  Asa is still working as a farmer.  His personal estate is worth $5000 and his real estate is $3000.  This 1873 Land ownership map shows where they was living at the time.  I believe the property would have been located at what is now the corner of Laurel St and Grove St. The 1880 census lists Asa living with Harriet, son David and David's wife, Jane Caroline Reed.  He is now a farmer for the Northampton Lunatic Hospital.  There is a possibility that he is living at the farmhouse on hospital property at what is now Village Hill Road and West Street.

By 1880, Asa was still working as a farmer, but living at 19 West St. with Harriet, their son and daughter-in-law.  Asa died on May 11th, 1882 of an epileptic coma in Northampton, MA. Sometime after Asa's death, Harriet moved to 67 West St.  She died on August 25th, 1894 of a Strangulated Hernia.  She is buried in Bridge Street Cemetery.

Happy 140th Anniversary to my Great Grandparents, David Joy Wright and Jane Caroline Reed

Today would have been the 140th wedding anniversary of my great grandparents on the Wright side,  David Joy Wright and Jane Caroline Reed. 

I have been a bit remiss this month, and forgot to post for a couple anniversaries.  So here they are.

October 3rd would have been the 135th wedding anniversary of my great grandparents on the Wright:Smith side, Merrick Luther Smith and Catherine Ellen McCann.

October 4th would have been the 157th wedding anniversary of my 2nd great grandparents on my Putnam:Connolly side, Peter Weatherby and Louisa Carver.

Charles Merrick Wright(1924-2008), my Uncle

• Born: May 24th, 1924 in Northampton, MA to David Sanders Wright(1887-1967)-W2 and Florence Edna Smith(1892-1937)-W3
• Married to Living in June 1952 in Northampton, MA
• Died: December 1st, 2008 in Wilmington, DE

The following is taken from his obituary:

He was born in Northampton, MA on May 25, 1924 to the late David S. and Florence Wright. Charlie was a loving and devoted husband and father of five, and adored his nine grandchildren. He served in the Army Artillery during WWII as a staff sergeant in the Battery A 291st Field Artillery Battalion, serving in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to complete his BS in Chemistry. He then earned his MS in Chemistry from Wesleyan University. He was employed by Hercules/Himont for the next 40-plus years as a Chemist with various responsibilities, receiving several patents for his work, including one for rocket fuel. Charlie served as the President of the Delaware chapter of the American Chemical Society. He supported the Red Cross with regular blood and platelet donations. 

He is buried in Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.

David Joy Wright(1922-1991), my Uncle

I want to write more on both my Uncles David and Charles at some point in the future, but for now I thought I would give some basic information.

• Died: January 14th, 1991 in Natick, MA

David was in the army during World War II from August 16th, 1993 to  October 10th, 1945.  He was captured and spent time in a German prisoner of war camp.  He and his wife had six children.

Caroline Wright Putnam's Obituary

Over the past week, I have been posting pages out of my Dad's Coppermine trip.  I had entered them all before last weekend and have them scheduled to post daily.  Last Saturday, my Mother pasted away and I have been having a hard time coming back to this project.  She is really the one who got me into genealogy and how it ties to history and has been a driving force for me to work on this blog. I'll get back to Dad's trip in the next few weeks or so, but will divert a bit and do something on Mom's ties back to the pilgrims.  Look for it soon.

Caroline Wright Putnam

Caroline Wright Putnam, age 86, of Marietta, OH died at her home on November 12th, 2016.  She was born on May 12th, 1930 named Florence Caroline, to David Sanders Wright and Florence Edna Wright in Northampton, MA. She was the youngest of five siblings (Catherine Sanders Wright Grandia, David Joy Wright, Charles Merrick Wright, and George Edward Wright).  Her mother died when she was seven, and she was raised by her father and her older sister, Kate, in a rambling house full of brothers, uncles, and adopted stray cats.  The house was built in the latter 1600s with pine floorboards hand sawn from a single tree, wooden pegs in the rafters, and had survived several French and Indian raids.

Caroline attended Smith College and received a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Amherst (now the University of Massachusetts).  She married Robert Ervin Putnam, PhD (Died March 27, 2011) of Leeds, Mass on August 23rd, 1952.  She is survived by her sister, Kate, brother, George, and children: David Putnam (JoAnne) of Chapman, Maine and grandsons Aaron (Katherine) and Ian; Robert Putnam (Lee) of Chicago, Illinois and grandsons Benjamin (Angela) and Christopher Putnam, and grandchildren Emily Towlerton (Drew), Richard, Douglas (Alyssa), and Michael Jones; Mary Bennett (Jim) of Newport, Ohio and granddaughters Elizabeth and Catherine; and Andrew Putnam (Kimberly) of Denver Colorado and granddaughters Tessa and Isabella.

Caroline was a woman of immense compassion, piercing intellect, and wry wit.  She never complained about the barriers society placed before women, she simply dismantled them with unrelenting energy and a smile.  Like her father and siblings, every stray cat found warmth, food, and love at Caroline’s home.  Her compassion for all living things extended to dogs, turtles, spiders, errant children, and gardens.

Caroline was a generous spirit and very active in the Marietta community.  She was a long-standing member of the League of Women Voters, and a stalwart member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta.  She helped to found the Outdoor Education Center, the recycling center, and the Empty Bowls Project, and spent a number of years at the Washington State Community College.

Caroline was always excelling at new things.  She learned to play multiple instruments and was a longtime member of the Valley Renaissance Consort.  She learned to fly and spent many years as a private pilot.  She was a passionate student of marine microfossils. She would eagerly receive packages of foul-smelling mud from various locations around the world and pore tirelessly over her microscope, identifying and photographing glorious shells foraminifera, coccolithophores, and radiolaria species.

Caroline thrived on chaos. She maintained a house full of grandchildren, cats, dogs, injured birds, turtles, gardens, and spiders.  All nature grieves at her passing.  She was selfless, uncomplaining, and unbelievably stubborn.  Her spirit and the goodness she brought to the world will live forever through her friends, family, acquaintances, and strangers who passed her on the street.

Testimonial to David Sanders Wright

Testimonial in honor of David S. Wright

So, one of the things I came across when I was back home was this poster size document.  I grabbed a picture of it because I didn't have a good way to bring it back.  On May 17th, 1949 there appears to have been a testimonial dinner thrown for my grandfather, David Sanders Wright.  This document is signed by many of the people he work with or coached over the years.  Some day I may try and decipher the signatures and figure out who some of them where.

Now let's move onto Jane Caroline Reed. In Jane, we start to see a hint of one of the family mysteries. I wont go into detail while describing her life, and wait for the next generation.

1846-1870
Jane was born in Whately, MA on February 12th, 1846 to Benjamin Franklin Reed and Sarah Wheeler Sanders.  She was the oldest child in the family, followed by Lucy Amy Reed (1848-1918) and Albert David Sanders (1852-1947)


The 1850 U.S. Census shows her living in Whately with her father, mother and sister (Albert had yet to be born).  By 1855 they the family had moved in with Jane's Grandparents, David Sanders, Amy Wheeler Sanders, and her Aunt Lucy S. Sanders.  A maid, Mary Grace, was also living in the home.  She was 24 years old from Ireland.  Oddly, Jane's sister does not appear to be living in the house.

In 1860, the family is still living with Jane's Grandparents and aunt.  There is s different individual living with them, Sarah Barrett,  age 22 from England.  , I assumed she was a servant save for one oddity in that she is listed as owning $200 dollars in land and $200 in personal property.  Still no sign of Jane's sister Lucy.

Some time after the census was taken in 1860 and before the draft rolls were collected for the Civil War in 1861, Jane's father moved to New York.  This is the last we here from him, and he represents the mystery I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Jane's Grandfather past away in 1864 and by 1865 the remainder of the family had moved to Northampton, MA.  This included Jane's mother, grandmother, aunt and brother.  The women don't appear to be employed and are listed as being ladies.  The have a different servant, Ellen Sulliva, who was from Ireland and 20 years of age. Their living arrangements where similar in 1870 according to the U.S. Census.  The only change was that they had a different Irish woman as a servant.  Namely Maggie Shannon, age 19.


1871-1900
Jane appears to have continued living with her mother until she got married on October 8th, 1879 to David Sanders Wright at age 33.  She and David moved in with David's parents and lived there until David's father died in 1883.  At that point, they, including her mother-in-law, moved to 19 West Street.  I believe both children where born at this house.  The older son, Edward Nims, was born April 3rd, 1884 and the second, David Sanders, was born November 16th, 1887.

Sometime in 1887, the family moved to the 67 West Street address.  Her mother was living next door at 59 West Street.  Her mother-in-law passed away in 1894.  The family remained at 67 West street for the rest of her life.  In 1900, they had a live in servant, Nellie Conway from Ireland.

1901-1936
On March 2nd, 1908, her husband past away, leaving her as head of the household with two sons.  Her older son, Edward had returned from college and her younger son, David was just about to graduate high school.  Soon after this, her mother, aunt, and sister moved in with the family.  the 1910 census had them also living with a 19 year old nurse, Viola Thayer.  Viola appears to have been born in Massachusetts.  Jane is listed as owning the house, but having a mortgage on it.

Later in 1910, her Aunt Lucy passed away.  David went off to college and then joined the Army in World War I. Both her mother and sister passed away in 1918.  By 1920, according to the 1920 Census, she and Edward were the only ones in the house.  She is listed as owning the house wothout having a mortgage.

Latter that year, David S., his wife Florence, and their new daughter moved back to the 67 West Street house.  The 1930 Census shows them all living at the house with the addition of 3 more grandchildren.  Jane's last grandchild was born that year.  Jane is not listed as owning the house, but her son David is shown head of the household as renting the property.  My superstition is that they only asked the head of the household the ownership questions and therefore did not ask Jane.  It is likely that David was paying rent to his mother.

Jane died on February 24th, 1936 at age 80.  I have not gotten a hold of here death certificate yet so don't know what the cause of death was.  See is buried along side her husband and son Edward in Bridge Street Cemetery.
