So, I am not confident in the work I did on John McCann's birth location. The work I did identifying the baptismal records is likely tied to a different McCann Family. Family history and DNA both point to John and his siblings being from County Mayo, Ireland. I have updated his biography to represent this.

John McCann's missing wife
March 11th, 1875
John McCann is hostler at the Morgan house. Four years ago his wife left him to go to Gloverville, N.Y., since which time he has never heard from her. About two years ago a report reached him that she was living there but he never had confirmation of it. This item may reach some one who can contribute a little information on the subject.

Father: George McCann(UNKN-UNKN)-S12

Marriage: Married Mary Clasby(1834-UNKN)-S7 on January 27th, 1856 in Lee, MA

Death: March 6th, 1910 in Togus, ME
John McCann was born to George McCann and Mary Hughes in about 1831 the third of six children. He was baptized Roman Catholic on July 10th, 1834 in Clonoe, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The family appeared to moved in 1836 to Aghagallon, Antrim, Northern Ireland and then Armagh, Armagh, Northern Ireland.
At some point after 1836 John's father George passed away and the family migrated to the United States. according to various records, John came over around 1853. The 1855 Massachusetts State census has him living in Lee, MA as a lodger with the Griswald family. His profession is listed as Other. He is listed as be 24 years old, which is a little off of his estimated birth year.
He married Mary Clasby(1834-UNKN) on January 27th, 1856 in Lee, MA. It was a Roman Catholic ceremony by Rev. Theodore Northise. John is listed as being a laborer. Their first child, George McCann(1856-UNKN), was born on November 30th, 1856 in Lee, MA. Their second child, Mary Jane McCann(1859-UNKN) was born on January 1st, 1859 in Lee, MA.
The 1860 U.S. Census shows John living with his wife and two children in Lee, MA. He is lsited as being a Livery Laborer and couldn't read or write. The couple's third child, Catehrine Ellen McCann was born on January 3rd, 1861 in Lee, MA. Their may have been a forth child, Lizzie Anne McCann born in 1862, but I have not been able to find a record of her birth.
On July 17th, 1862, John joined the Union army. He was listed as being Hostler. He became a member of Company B of the 37th Massachusetts Infantry as a wagoner. John served from August 30th, 1862 to June 21st, 1865. As a wagoner, it is unlikely he saw combat but was likely associated with most of the 37th's movements. Company B was one of the Zouave units which meant they utilized light infantry tactics that emphasized open-order formations. He is listed as dislocating his right knee on November 15th, 1863 in Falmouth, VA and was discharged on June 21st, 1865 in Halls, Hill, VA.

Something happened to the family during the war. John is listed as being married in 1863, by the family has broken up and the children spread all over the place by 1865. Family legend has it that the Roman Catholic church was involved in the split up and that Catherine, my Great Grandmother was sent to become a cook in a lumber camp. This is a bit odd, because she would have been 4 years old at the time. There is a possibility that the George McCann shown as living with with John's older brother George in the 1870 U.S. Census is John's son. Whatever the case< I have not been able to find any other trace of George or Mary Jane.
The next time John shows in the record, he is working as a Hostler at Morgan House in Lee, MA in 1874. There is no sign of his family. on February 26th, 1876, he marries Mary Delan in Lee, MA. This is listed as being both of their second marriages and it was conducted by a Justice of the Peace. This makes me think that whatever happened with the first marriage was not condoned by the Roman Catholic Church. The 1880 U.S. Census shows them living together in Lee, MA with a daughter named Lizzie. John is listed as being a stableman who can't read or write. It also lists his birthplace as England, but I am wondering if this is a lie to cover his Irish heritage. Lizzie is shown as being born around 1862. I can see one or two possibilities with Lizzie.
- She is the daughter of John's first marriage
- She is the Daughter of Mary Delan's first marriage and John adopted her.
By 1890, he has moved to Pittsfield, MA and is a boarder. There is no sign of his family. On August 13th, 1894, he is admitted to the Veterans Home in Togas, ME. He is listed as being 5' 5 3/4" with a medium complexion, blue eyes and gray hair. He can't read or write and his profession was that of a Hostler. He is listed as having a series of ailments including:
- Old dislocation of right knee
- Insufficiency of mitral valve of heart
- hemorrhoids
The 1900 U.S. Census shows John living at the Eastern Branch National Home for DVS in Chelsea, Kennebec, ME. John died on March 6th, 1910 of Pneumonia and is buried at the Togus National Cemetery in Togas, ME.

McCann Baptism Records
In my research on the immigrant generation of the McCanns, I've found what may be their Baptism Records. Here is what I have found:
George McCann:
Sources:
George McCann:
- Parents: George McCann & Margt Hughes
- Baptized on October 2nd, 1824
- Location: Tynon, Armagh, Ireland
- Roman Catholic
- Diocese: Armagh
Catherine McCann:
John McCann:
Jane McCann:
Mary Jane McCann:
I couldn't find anything for Elizabeth. Given that I am not even sure that is her name, I'm not surprised. All the records list their ages as zero, but I don't think this comes from the underlying document. I am highly suspicious of the record form Jane McCann. Parents seem wrong and it is a ways away from the other ones. I suspect the mother listed for George McCann may have been a transcription error for Mary and the father listed for Mary Jane McCann may have been George instead of Jas. If these are correct records, the family moved quite a bit. I wonder if this ties to the father's profession or something else. Here is a map showing all the locations and how close they are to each other.
- Parents: George McCann & Mary Hughes
- Baptized on April 14th, 1831

Mary Jane McCann:

The Walsh Connection - Marriage and Death Records
Mary's marriage record gives us a bit more information. Mary McCann and Martin Walsh where married on April 16th, 1854. Mary was age 16 and Martin was 36. This was Martin's second marriage, so it may be that the Thomas and Martin were Martin's children from a first marriage. This places Martin's immigration date between 1851 and 1855. Mary's parent's are listed as George and Mary McCann. This was a catholic ceremony, and therefore, Mary was the other catholic in the family.
According to her death certificate, she died on October 11th, 1885 of Heart Disease. She was 45 years old. There are a couple of discrepancies. It says she was born in Pittsfield, MA and that her parents were John and Mary McCann. I don't believe this is correct information.
- George McCann: A Protestant who died in Ireland married Mary in Ireland, she was a Catholic who was born 115 years before the article was written and died 20 years before writing
- George McCann, a Presbyterian, born in January, 1834 in Ireland, Immigrated 1845-1850, married Mary in 1867.
- Benedicta McCann-born January, 1865 in New York
- John McCann, married a Catholic, died before the article was written
- Catherine McCann, a Catholic, born November, 1829 in Ireland, died on September 4th, 1911 in Pittsfield, MA married a Bartlett(Bartley) Cummings born July, 1820 in Ireland, is 82 when the article was written
- Edward Cummings-born January 20th, 1852 in Pittsfield, MA
- George Thomas Cummings-born September 13th, 1853 in Pittsfield, MA
- Bartley Cummings-born about 1855 lives in Pittsfield, MA married Maria

- George H. Walsh-born 1860, married Catherine A. Conway
- Lilliam M. Walsh, born in 1884
- Arther A. Walsh, born in 1891
- Jane E. Walsh, born abt 1866
- Sarah L. Walsh, born abt 1869
- Jane McCann, born about 1840 in Ireland. Married Mr. Price. She immigrated in 1865.
- Walter H. Price, born May 1877 in New York.
- Lillie Price, born January 1875 in New York, married John Stagg on June 6th, 1899 in Manhatten, New York.
- Daughter
Stray facts:
- George McCann immigrated before 1851-According to the newspaper article

The Walsh Connection - The 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census, and the 1865 Massachusetts State Census
Now that we know Mary's name, I can find the family in earlier census records.
The 1880 U.S. Census has Mary and Martin living in Pittsfield. Mary was Age 42 and born around 1838 in Ireland. Her husband Martin was 62, born abt 1816 in Ireland. He is listed as being a stone mason. George is age 20 and working as a Tin Smith. There are two daughters listed. Jane E. Walsh, age 14, born abt 1866 and Sarah L. Walsh, age 11, born abt 1869. They are living at 280 Clough St.
Dialing back to the 1870 U.S. Census, Mary is listed as being abt 40 and being born in 1830. This does not match with the other records, so I think it was a mistake. Martin is 50, and working as a Stone Mason. George is 10, Jane is 5 and Sarah is 1.
The 1865 Massachusetts State Census shows Mary living with Martin. Mary is 26 and Martin is 46. George is age 5. There are two other people living with them. Thomas Walsh, age 19 was born in Ireland, and Martin Walsh, age 15 was born in Massachusetts.
I can't find any of the older census records for Mary, so the next post will show what can be gleaned from her marriage and death certificates.

Stepping back to the 1870 census, we find Catherine living with her husband, and seven or five children in Pittsfield. I'll explain the children confusion this in a minute. Catherine is 40, which lines up pretty well with the 1829 birth year I expect. Her husband is listed as a Stone Mason. They own the house and it is valued at $1500 and they have personal property worth $100.
We see the five children that are listed in the 1880 census but there are two other family members. Edward Cummings, age 18 (born about 1852) who is working at a Woolen Mill and George, age 17 (born about 1853), who works on the railroad. From the census, I cannot tell if these are their children so I went looking for thier birth records, and they are Bartley and Catherine's older sons.

The 1900 U.S. Census has Catherine (spelled with a C this time) living in her son Bartley's house on 50 Madison Ave with her husband, son, his wife and their five children. Catherine's husband's name was also Bartley. He was 70, being born in July of 1820 in Ireland. He immigrated in 1847 and married Catherine in 1846. Therefore they where married in Ireland. His was a stone mason.
Catherine is show as being born in November of 1829 in Ireland. This date matches better with the information in the article, so I think that the 1910 Census is off. This census shows her immigrating in 1852, so it may be that Catherine and Bartley where married in Ireland. He then immigrated to the US and Catherine followed a few years later.
Catherine's son Bartley is married to Maria. He was born in October of 1854 in Massachusetts and they had been married for 19 years (1881) they have five children, who are all living.
- Anna G. Cummings, born February 1882, age 18
- George E. Cummings, born February 1884, age 16
- Frederick M. Cummings, born August 1886, age 13
- Mary A. Cummings, born June 1888, age 11
- Bartley W. Cummings, born July 1890, age 9
They are all attending school when the census was taken.

Given that Catherine's husband died between the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses, I went looking for his death certificate. He died on December 16th, 1907 of Apoplexy with contributing factors of bronchopneumoia. His father was named Bartley as well and from Ireland. They didn't know the name of his mother. He was buried in St. Joseph's cemetery on December 19th, 1907. I can't find his record on find-a-grave, but I can see some of his children there. Given that St. Joseph's is a catholic cemetery, it is my belief that Catherine was one of the girls that were catholic.

If we look back at the Berkshire Eagle article, there are more strings we can tug on.
- Thirty-two years ago Mr. McCann's wife died and husband and daughter of the immediate family remain. Bartley Cummings and George H. Walsh, both in public service of Pittsfield, are nephews of Mr. McCann's.
- A sister of Mr. McCann, who is mother of Bartley Cummings, is 82 years old. She and Mr. McCann are the only members of that family who are living.
I'll start digging into the Cummings connection here. We know that Bartley Cummings was alive and living in Pittsfield when the article is written. His mother is also still alive. So lets see if Bartley shows up in the 1910 U.S. Census. There was a Bartholomew Cummings, age 55 living in Pittsfield, MA at this time. He lives at 41 Symour Street with his mother, wife, and four children. He was born about 1855 in Massachusetts. He was working as an inspector for the city.
His mother's name was Katherine Cummings, and she was 87 at the time of census. The age is a bit of a discrepancy but I think this is the right family. She was a widow and immigrated in 1855. She was born in Ireland and could not read or write. The record says that she had eleven children, seven of which survived.
Bartholomew was married to Maria, age 49. She had 5 children, all of which were living at the time of the census. four of them, Anna G. (28), Fredrick (23), May A. (21) and Bartholomew (19).

If we jump forward to the 1920 U.S. Census, Bartley is living with his wife and two of there children at the Seymour Street house as well as with his one year old granddaughter, Marjorie A Naughton. I haven't had time to research this little mystery. Katherine is no longer there so we can assume that she died before 1920. Looking at the Massachusetts Death Index, there is a record of Katherine dying in 1911.
