Mary Lydia Mooers was born on March 17th, 1830 in Blissfield, New Brunswick to John Mooers and Mary Frances Small.  She was the 6th of 12 children.  According to birth records, the family seems to have jumped between Blissfield and Miramichi, but I suspect this is a artifact of the way things were recorded. Mary married Lewis l. Green in a Baptist Church on April 10th, 1848 in Blissfield, NB. Mary had just turned 18 and Lewis was 14 years older then her. Their first son, Alfred Alonzo Green, was born on September 14th, 1848 in Mirimachi, NB, only six months after their marriage.  Their first daughter was born on September 14th, 1850 in Blissfield, NB.  

The 1851 Canadian Census shows Mary and Lewis living in Blissfield, NB with their children Alfred and Elvira.  Lewis was a farmer and Shoemaker.  Their next child, Margaret Green was born on September 5th, 1852 in Miramichi, NB. Alma Hannah Green was born in Miramichi, NB on October 24th. 1854.  Alfretta Lola Green was born on June 9th, 1857 in Miramichi, NB.  Their next son, Daivd W. Green was born on February 27th, 1861 in Miramichi, NB.  The 1861 Canadian Census shws the family living in Blissfield, NB with Lewis listed as being a farmer.

Devoice documents show that Lewis abandoned Mary Lydia and the family on December 28th, 1862. This was while she was pregnant with their last child.  Mary Agnes Green was born on April 22nd, 1863 in Miramichi, NB.  Soon afterward, Mary Lydia and the children immigrated to the United States and moved to the Ludlow area.  Her father had moved to Ludlow, ME between 1848 and 1850 and I suspect Mary Lydia was joining them.  Mary Lydia's daughter Margaret died, at age 11, in Houlton, ME after the move.  

Mary Lydia had another child, Ernest Walter Lightbody with John Lightbody on November 19th, 1868 in Ludlow, ME.  She filed for Divorce from Lewis L. Green on December 10th, 1868 in Houlton and the Divorce was granted in February of 1869.  John Lightbody filed his intent to marry Mary Lydia in March of 1869.  There is an 1870 U.S. Census record of John living with a Margaret Lightbody and children in Ludlow, but this does not seem to match this John/Mary family.  John and Mary Lydia's last child, Margaret Lightbody, was born on  June 22nd, 1872 in Ludlow, ME.  The 1877 Land Ownership Map shows John owning land next to Mary Lydia's brother Peter Mooers.

The 1880 U.S. Census shows Mary Lydia living with John and their two children Ernest and Margaret as well as her children David and Mary.  John is a farmer and David is a Laborer. The 1900 U.S. Census lists Mary Lidia as a widow living with her daughter Margaret and son in law Joseph Campbell.  He son Ernest is also living with the family.  Joseph is a Farmer and Ernest is a Millman.  Mary Lydia is listed as being able to read, write and speak English.  The 1910 U.S. Census still has her living with Margaret and Joseph.  

Mary Lydia died on November 18th, 1914 in Ludlow, ME.  She was 84 years, 8 months and 1 day old.  She is buried in the Ludlow Cemetery.

Benjamin Franklin Carpenter was born on September 22nd, 1822 to Joshua Carpenter and Susan Heald.  He was the seventh of nine children.  He married Rebecca Smith Hammond on August 19th, 1843 in Lincoln, ME.  Their first child, Juliette H. Carpenter, was born on March 25th, 1844 in Lincoln, ME and died there on July 2st, 1844.   Their second child, Frank H. Washington, was born on May 18th, 1845 followed by a daughter, Kate, in 1847.  Their son, Thomas Jefferson, was born on May 7th, 1849.  This was soon after the death of Benjamin Franklin's brother, named Thomas Jefferson, on September 13th, 1848.  It is likely that their son was named after Benjamin's brother.

According to the 1850 U.S. Census, Benjamin Franklin was 27 years old and working as a farmer.  The farm is worth $1,000.  He is living in Lincoln, ME with his parents, Joshua(62) and Susan(60), his wife Rebecca(27) and their children, Frank(50, Kate(3) and Thomas(1).  Another son, Randolph J., was born on May 14th, 1851.  George Washington was born on July 8th, 1853.  They had another daughter, Margaret Anne on April 4th, 1855.  I've not been able to find a location of her birth, but suspect it was still in Lincoln, ME.  The family started moving soon after that.  Their last son, William Newton, was born in Van Buren, ME on January 3rd, 1857.

Benjamin was the first man to clear land in Letter B (now Hammond). He bought two lots in 1858, built a house and moved there in 1860. The 1860 U.S. Census has the family living in Houlton, ME.  I suspect this is actually Letter B.  Benjamin is a farmer with Real Estate worth $750 and a Personal Estate worth $200.  He is living with his wife Rebecca(37) and children frank(15), Kate(13), (Thomas) Jefferson(11), Randolph(9), George(7), Margaret(5)-listed as Mary, and William(3)-listed as Willie.  Their last child, Laura J., was born on December 9th, 1860 and died on May 24th, 1861.

The family is still in Hammond in 1870 according to the 1870 U.S. Census.  Benjamin is 48 years old and listed as a citizen.  He has continued farming and his real estate is now worth $800 and personal estate is worth $400.  He is living with his wife, Rebecca(48), and children - Frank(25), Thomas J.(21), George W.(17), Margate A.(15) and William N. (13).  Kate has gotten married and moved out and Randolph is also gone.  

The 1850, 1860 and 1870 census also have a record of Benjamin's farming information thought the 1870 does not seem to have been completely filled out by the census taker.  The table below compares the different years.  The 1850 record is a completely different farm then th one listed in 1860 and 1870.

Benjamin died on January 21st, 1879 at age 56.  He is buried in Section 3, Block 2, Grave 106 of Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton, ME.

Died: September 14th, 1894 in Houlton, ME

Christiana Jane Wormwood was born on March 25th, 1804 in Alfred ME to Samuel Wormwood and Sally Sarah Patterson.  Some records show the birth date as November 24th, 1804, but the March date corresponds to the death certificate.  She was the oldest of four children.



Her father left home in 1811 when she was seven years old to find work as a carpenter and ended up in Houlton, ME.  In 1813, he sent for the family and they started the journey north on September 1st, 1813.  They first went to Saco, ME and then up to Portland, ME and stayed the night at the Elm House.  They left Portland on September 7th, 1813 and traveled to Winthrop, ME where the rested for a day.  Next they went to Albion, ME crossing the Kennebec River.  The road from Albion, ME to Oldtown, ME was rough.  They then went by canoe to what is now Danforth, ME.

From there, the carried the canoes to Grand Lake, then canoed up to North Lake, NB.  From there, they carried then to Eal River Lake, NB and then canoed down the river to the confluence of the St John River, 12 miles south of Woodstock, NB.  After they had gone up the St John six miles, they were met by her father with horses.  From there they went overland to Houlton, ME and arrived on October 10th, 1813.




At first the family lived with Aaron Putnam.  Samuel Wormwood had bought thirty acres off of Aaron Putnam at Washburn place and built the second frame house in the settlement for the family.  Christiana's mother died in April of 1817 in Woodstock, NB when Christiana was 12 years old.



 At age 13, She married Amos Putnam on November 1st, 1818 in Houlton, ME.  She and Amos had the following children together before his death.

Amos died on December 29th, 1849.  The 1850 U.S. Census shows Christiana living with 12 of her children.  Lydia and Alonzo seem to have moved out.  Her last child, Frank Lewis Putnam was born on September 18th, 1850.  That is about 8 1/2 month's after Amos's death.

The 1860 U.S. Census has Christiana , age 56, living with Polly, Isa, Varney, Henry, CHarles, Maria, Samuel and Frank.  The property is worth $2000 and she has a personal estate of $500.  There is also a four year old boy named John Stuart living with the family.  I have no idea how he is connected.

The 1870 U.S. Census has Christiana, age 66, living with her sons Samuel and Frank.  The property is worth $2000 and her personal estate is $200.  The family owns 80 acres of land.  30 of that is improved, 40 is woodland, and 10 is something else.  The farm equipment is worth $100.  There are 2 milk cows worth $50 and they are growing 50 bushels of oats and 100 bushels of buckwheat.

The 1880 U.S. Cencus shows Christianan living with her son Frank as a farmer.  In 1979, the farm had 20 acres mown and 30 not mown. The farm had 8 milk cows, 3 swine, 15 chickens and 2 other animals.  It produced 20 tons of hay, 200 lbs of butter and 50 dozen eggs.  The 1880 Census also shows that there were 60 acres tilled, 20 acres of forest and 50 acres of other land such as meadows and orchards.  The land was worth $1500, equipment $70, livestock $225, and products $300.

Christiana died on September 14th, 1894 of Heart Failure in Houlton, ME.  She was listed as being 90 years, 5 months, and 6 days old.  She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.  The Bangor Daily Whip and Courier ran her obituary on September 21st, 1894.

Mrs. Christiana J. Putnam, of Houlton, died recently at her home, aged 90 years.  She was one of the early settlers of the town. At the time of her demise she was the oldest member of the Unitarian society, and the only one remaining of it's original members.

Amos Putnam was born on October 6th, 1794 in New Salem, MA to Aaron Putnam and Isabella Patrick.  He was the first of four sons.  He moved with the family to Woodstock, NB and then what would become Houlton, ME in 1809.

He married Christiana Jane Wormwood on November 1st, 1818 in Houlton, ME.  See was the daughter of Samuel Wormwood and Sally Patterson.  I dont have much information right now on his life in Houlton.  There is quite a bit in the Houlton histories I mentioned in the last post.  Once I have indexed them, I will rewrite this post to include the relevant information.  Given what we know, it was likely he was a farmer.  Here is the information I have on his children's births:

Amos died on December 29th, 1849 in Houlton, Me.  It must of been a sudden illness as he had another child, Frank Lewis Putnam born on September 18th, 1850.  That was about 8 1/2 months after Amos's death.  I transcribed Amos's will back in 2016.  He made sure his wife and underage children were taken care of but did not seem to know his wife was pregnant.  I still need to transcribe his probate records.  

He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton, ME.

Frank H Washington Carpenter was born on May 18th, 1845 in Lincoln, ME to Benjamin Franklin Carpenter and Rebecca Smith Hammond.  He was the second of eight children. The family moved to Van Buren, ME sometime between 1853 and 1857.  By 1860, the family was living in Houlton, ME and moved to Hammond, ME by 1870.  Though Frank was about the right age, he did not participate in the Civil War.  in 1870, he was 25 years old, but still living with his family.  I have no documentation, but I suspect he was helping his father with the farm.



Frank married Elvira A Green of Blissfield, New Brunswick, England.  She was the daughter of Lewis L Green and Mary Lydia Mooers.  Their first children, twin girls, were born on June 14th, 1872 in Houlton, ME and were named Nora Louise and Cora Margaret.  According to their birth certificates, Frank was acting as a trader at the time.  On September 14th, 1874, their first son, Walter Garfield, was born in Houlton, ME.  By 1875, the family had moved to Fort Kent, ME.


Their next child, Althea, was born on December 28th, 1875 in Fort Kent.  She was followed by Frank Benjamin on February 3rd, 1880. At this time, Frank is listed as being a Cattle Dealer.  The 1880 U.S. Census has the family living in Fort Kent and Frank acting as the Deputy Sheriff after being unemployed for 6 month.  By 1887, the family had moved back to Houlton.  On May 18th, 1887, Frank and Elvira had another set of twins, Elvira Lydia and Charles Stinchfield.

1894 for a hard year for the family, On June 2nd, 1894 their daughter Althea died at age 18.  On the same day, their last child, Ralph B., was born.  He died soon after on September 14th, 1894.

In 1900, Frank was living with Elvira and their three youngest children in Houlton.  Frank was listed as being an insurance agent and the family was renting their house. Frank and Elvira are shown to be living at 32 Highland Ave in 1910 with the younger twins.  They own the house without a mortgage but Frank has been out of work for a bit over 4 years.  Elvira died on April 26th, 1917 and Frank continued to live in the house with the twins.  In 1920 at age 75, he is listed as being a traveling salesman for a nursery stock company,



The 1930 U.S. Census has Frank living with his daughter Cora Margaret and her husband Amos Putnam as well as Frank's youngest daughter.  They were living at 9 Charles Street. Frank died on June 22nd, 1936 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton, ME.

Sarah Bradbury was born on August 27th, 1820 to Isaac Bradbury(1787-1860) and Abigail Small Lane(1794-1870) in Hiram ME. She was the forth of fourteen children.  By 1823, the family had moved to Brownfield, ME and live there until,  1833. This is when they moved to Haynesville, ME.




On May 26th, 1851, Sarah married Levi Houlton Putnam(1820-1890)-P4 in Houlton,ME.  Based on her death certificate, I believe she moved into the Elm Street house where she spent the rest of her life. Her first child, Caroline Abbie Putnam(1853-1935) was born on January 1st, 1853.  William L. Putnam(1855-1917) was born in 1855.  Their last child, Amos Putnam(1863-1936) was born on June 16th, 1863.

Sarah's husband, Levi Houlton Putnam died in 1890.  Sarah died on January 2nd, 1901 of Pneumonia.  She had been sick for two weeks.  She had also been suffering from Gastric Enteritis for about four weeks.  She is buried next to her husband in Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, ME.

Levi Houlton Putnam was born in 1820 to Amos Putnam(1794-1849)-P8 and Christina Jane Wormwood(1804-1894)-P9 in Houlton, ME.  I don't have any documentation to tell us the his actually birth date.  He was the oldest of seventeen children.

His father died in 1849, and we find Levi listed as living with his mother and eleven of his siblings in the 1850 U.S. Census.  He is listed as being a teacher.  On May 26th, 1851 he married Sarah Bradbury(1820-1901)-P9.  She was the daughter of Issac Bradbury(1787-1860)-P10 and Abigail Small Lane(1794-1870) and was born in Hiram, ME. Their first child, Caroline Abbie Putnam was born in January of 1853.  In 1855, their second child, William L. Putnam was born.

The 1860 U.S. Census has Levi listed as living with his wife and two children.  He is a farmer and owns $500 dollars of real estate, and $300 of personal estate.  Using the Measuring Worth site, That represents the personal estate represents about $9,000 today. I am not going to convert the land value, as I don't think it is a correct conversion.  Looking at the U.S. Selected Federal Census Non-Population Schedules for June 8th, 1860 we get more information.  Levi owns 20 acres of improved land and an additional 10 acres of unimproved land for the value of $500 .  He also has $50 ($1,500 in 2018) of farm equipment. On the land he has 1 milk cow, 1 other type of cattle, 6 sheep and a swine worth $100 ($3,000 in 2018).  He is growing 5 bushes of Rye worth $100 ($3,000 in 2018) and is storing 24 pounds of wool.

In the 1862 city directory, Levi is listed as being a school teacher.  I think he was probably both a school teacher and farmer.  On June 16th, 1863 their third child, Amos Putnam(1863-1936)-P2 was born in Houlton, ME.  Accord to the 1870 U.S. Census, Levi is still living in Houlton with his wife and children.  His property value has stayed the same but his personal estate has dropped to $100.  He is still listed as living with his children in the 1880 U.S. Census and is still a farmer.

Harriette Carpenter Putnam was born March 2nd, 1898 in Oakfield, ME to Amos Putnam and Cora Margaret Carpenter.  She lived with the family and was training to be a nurse.  She married Harold Farnhan Cates(1892-1947) on August 21st, 1924 in Houlton, ME.  He was a public accountant.  They had two children.  Frances Ann Cates(1925-1940) and another daughter who I believe is still living.  Harriette died on September 4th, 1992 in Cleverdale, NY.  She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton, ME.
