Limited Biography of Thomas Connelly (1791-1871)-C8

 I am not very confident in this information, but have not been able to get anything more concrete.  I need to get better at my Prince Edward Island and Irish genealogical research.  I will be putting a number of flags in the text to highlight the gaps.

I have the Thomas was born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1791.  I don't have any documentation of the source of this information, so I am reasonably skeptical of it.  At some point after this he immigrated from Ireland to Prince Edward Island.  HE married Henrietta Affleck on une 28th, 1832 in Charlottetown, PEI.  They had a number of children including James C. Connolly who was born on December 25th, 1837 in Mount Stewart, PEI. Thomas died on March 21st, 1872 in Charlottetown, PEI.  HE is buried there, but I don't know the exact cemetery.

Louisa Carver was born on May 4th, 1837 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Joseph Carver and Catherine Cummings.  She was the third of five children.  She was baptized Roman Catholic on  June 8th, 1837 at St. Dunstan's Basilica by James F. Morris.  She married Peter Weatherby(1836-1914) on October 4th, 1861 in Lot 49, Prince Edward Island, Canada.


Their first child, Mary Ann Weatherby, was born on September 8th, 1862 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.  And the family lived in Charlottetown until Louisa's death.  Their second child, Catherine J. Weatherby, was born on January 26th, 1864. Their first  son, John Thomas Weatherby was born on August 19th, 1867.  Their second son, Peter Weatherby was born on June 29th, 1870.  He was followed by Michael Weatherby on April 22nd, 1872.



Margaret Elizabeth Weatherby was born on October 17th, 1876.  She is not listed in the 1881 census, so likely died before 1881.  William Augustus Weatherby was born on June 30th, 1879.  The 1881 census shows Louisa living with her husband, and some of his children, namely Catherine, John Thomas, Peter, Michael and William.  Mary Ann would have been around 19 and may have moved out, though she didn't get married until 1887.  The entire family are listed as Roman Catholic except her husband, who was a Wesleyan Methodist. 

Their last child, Frances Bernard Weatherby was born on March 24th, 1883.  In 1888, Peter is listed in the city index as living at 20 Clark.  In 1890, the city index shows him as living on Palmer's Lane.   All the evidance supports Louisa still living with him.  The 1891 has Louisa living with her husband and John, Peter, Michael, William and Frances.  Peter is listed as being a member of the Free Church His profession is doing something with coal, which I can't fully decipher and a laborer.  His sons John and Peter are listed as being a fisherman and a painter, respectively.  There is a 1 year old child named Mary listed as being a lodger.

The 1901 census has Louisa and Peter living with their sons John, Peter, William and Francis.  Peter Senior is listed as being a laborer and having an annual income of $100.  John is also a laborer, but doesn't show any income.  Peter is a painter, making about $200 a year.  William is a sailor, making $350 a year, and Francis is a painter, making $150 a year from painting and $150 a year from other jobs.  None of them worked the entire year and between them they brought in $950 the previous year.  There is also a girl, Mary A., listed as being Peter Seniors daughter.  Given that she is age 11 I find this to be highly unlikely and is more likely Louisa's granddaughter.  She is probably the same Mary listed as a lodger in the 1891 census.  They also have a 7 month old boarder named John C. Monoghan living with them.

By 1911, she is living with husband and granddaughter Annie, age 8.  Louisa died about 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Joaana I Eagan was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Patrick Eagan and Mary McDonald.  She married James C Connoly before 1859 and had six children while living in Charlottestown, Prince Edwards Island, Canada.  Their first son, Frederick Patrick Connolly was born on June 4th, 1864.  He was followed by James Connolly in 1866, Henrietta Connolly on June 22nd, 1866, Mary Connolly in 1873, Frank Connolly in 1870, Mary Connolly in 1873,  and John Thomas Connolly in 1875.  Given that all the baptisms occurred in in either St Andrews Church or St. Dunstan's Basillica, it is likely the family were Irish Catholics. I have no information on her death or burial location.

Alright, I have a habit of following rabbit holes when I'm pulling things together.  If I don't feel I have enough information on a person, I tend to keep searching and it keeps me from moving on.  The Canadian Connolly, Eagan, Weatherby and Carver branches of my Putnam side are examples of this.  The information I have is spotty, and I am not completely sure all of it is right.  I need to just post on them so I can move on.  I suspect I will need to get more familiar with Prince Edward Island genealogy before I can really close these mysteries.  If anyone has better information on these lines, I'd love the help.  So I'll start with James Connolly, my Great Great Grandfather.

1862-1890
Mary Ann Weatherby was born on September 8th, 1862 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada to Peter Weatherbie and Louisa Carver.  She was baptized at St. Dunstan's Basillica by D. McDonald on September 30th, 1862.



As with her husband, I don't have much information on her until her marriage to Frederick Patrick Connolly(1859-Unkn)-C2 in 1887.  This was likely in Charlottetown and could have occurred at the Basilica, as they were both Catholic.  Allot of the next few paragraphs are duplicates from Frederick's entry, I am including them here so that you can have as complete a picture of her life as possible.

Their first child, Edward A. Connolly(1888- after 1940) was born in November of 1888 in Prince Edward Island.  This was probably in Charlottetown, but I haven't found the documentation yet.

1891-1910
Their second child, Maud M. Connolly(1891-1975) was born on November 2nd, 1991 in Prince Edward Island.  The family moved from Prince Edward Island after her birth and before the birth of their next child.  Helen A. Connelly(1893-1985) was born in Massachusetts on June 29th, 1893.  Their next daughter, Mary Gertrude Connelly(1895-1972)-C1 was born on June 6th, 1895 in Needham, MA.



They moved back to Charlottetown, PEI before the birth of their next daughter in 1897.  Jueannette Connolly(1897-1989) was born in Charlottetown, PEI on October 7th, 1897.  Their last child, Madeline Carver Connelly(1899-1990) was also born in Charlottetown, PEI on April 25th, 1899.

According to the 1900 U.S. Census, the family was back in Massachusetts and renting at 24 Washburn Ave., Cambridge, MA. Most of the documents show that she went by Anne or Annie instead on Mary.  She is listed as having 7 children but only 6 of them are living.  That means that she lost a child at some point but I don't have any other information about this.  This census says she immigrated in 1899 but other records show her arriving in 1880 and between 1891 and 1893.  She can read, write and speak English.



1910-1939
By 1910, according to the 1910 U.S. Census, they had moved and were renting at 50 Cedar Street, Cambridge, MA.  In the 1920 U.S. Census, she is living in the Cedar Street house with son and three of her daughters.  Her husband is no longer living with them.  She is list as not being a naturalized citizen.

By the 1930 U.S. Census, she is listed as being a widow and living with her daughters, Helen, Madeline and Jueannette.  They are renting a house at 135 Holwarthy St., Cambridge MA for $45.00 a month.  It says she immigrated in 1905 and has become a naturalized citizen.


She appears to have died in 1939 in Cambridge, MA but I haven't found anything else on this yet and don't know the location of her burial.

Frederick Partick Connolly(1859-Unkn)-C2

Now I am going to talk about the Connolly branch of the family for a bit.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of gaps in what I know about Frederick Patrick Connolly and Mary Ann Weatherby.  I haven't even found any pictures of them. I'm hoping as I go through my Father's papers I'll find some of the missing information or maybe some of the family can help me out.  This is our first connection to Canada and up these branches we will uncover our Loyalists ancestors.

1859-1890
Frederick Patrick Connolly was born on June 4th, 1859 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada to James Connolly and Johana Eagan.  His baptism was conducted by Thomas Phelan at St. Dustan's Basilica in Charlottetown on June 5th, 1859.


I Don't have much information on him until his marriage to Mary Ann Weatherby(1862-1939)-C3 in 1887.  This was likely in Charlottetown and could have occurred at the Basilica, as they were both Catholic.

Their first child, Edward A. Connolly(1888- after 1940) was born in November of 1888 in Prince Edward Island.  This was probably in Charlottetown, but I haven't found the documentation yet.

1891-1910
Their second child, Maud M. Connolly(1891-1975) was born on November 2nd, 1991 in Prince Edward Island.  The family moved from Prince Edward Island after her birth and before the birth of their next child.  Helen A. Connelly(1893-1985) was born in Massachusetts on June 29th, 1893.  Their next daughter, Mary Gertrude Connelly(1895-1972)-C1 was born on June 6th, 1895 in Needham, MA.



They moved back to Charlottetown, PEI before the birth of their next daughter in 1897.  Jueannette Connolly(1897-1989) was born in Charlottetown, PEI on October 7th, 1897.  Their last child, Madeline Carver Connelly(1899-1990) was also born in Charlottetown, PEI on April 25th, 1899.

According to the 1900 U.S. Census, the family was back in Massachusetts and renting at 24 Washburn Ave., Cambridge, MA.  Frederick, listed as Fred, had been married to Mary Anne, listed as Annie, for 13 years and had first immigrated to the U.S. in 1889.  He is listed as being a carpenter and could read, write and speak English.


1910-1930
By 1910, according to the 1910 U.S. Census, they had moved and were renting at 50 Cedar Street, Cambridge, MA.  He is still working as a house carpenter along with his son.  He has not become a citizen yet, but his son has.  The census has him immigrating in 1885, his wife in 1880, his oldest children in 1892 and his youngest in 1900.  This seems to show that he and the family moved between Charlottetown, PEI and Massachusetts multiple times before finally settling permanently in Massachusetts.

He filed for Naturalization on May 8th, 1920.  The record stated that he was born on June 4th, 1859.  He immigrated from St. John, New Brunswick to the United States on May 12, 1912 arriving by train in Vanceboro, Maine. He was age 60, 5 foot 11 inches, 155 lbs with light gray hair and blue eyes.  He continued to work as a carpenter and was living at 59 Dow Street, Arlington, MA.  Interestingly, his wife Annie was still living with the children at the 50 Cedar St. address.

I lose all track of him after this.  I may have found him in the 1920 census living at 186 Amory St in Boston, MA but he is listed as being away and there is not enough info to prove it was him.  The 1930 U.S. Census lists his wife Annie as being a widow, so he seems to have passed away between 1920 and 1930 but I have not been able to find a record of his death or where he is buried.  I'll continue to search and maybe uncover something to share in the future.
