Birth: March 30th, 1789 in Shutesbury, MA

Simeon Reed was born on March 30th, 1789 to Benjamin Reed and Abiah Macomber in Shutesbury, MA.  He was the 5th of 6 children.  His parents died in 1808 and 1809 respectively.  At some point he moved to Whately, MA, married Maranda Morton on August 2nd, 1814.

Simeon joined up as a drummer in the militia during the War of 1812.  He served in Captain A. Pratt's company, under Major W. Ward; Battalion of Rifles from September 22nd, 1814 until October 31st, 1814.  The company was raised in Whatley and was stationed in Boston.

Simeon and Miranda's first child, Janett, was born on January 10th, 1815 in Whately, MA.  A second daughter, Mary, was born on December 2nd, 1817.  Their first son, Benjamin Franklin, was born on October 5th, 1819. The 1820 census shows Simeon working in manufacturing with the following household members:

Their second son, George Washington, was born on February 23rd, 1825, followed by two more daughters, Elizabeth on October 19th, 1826 and Martha W. on February 22nd, 1829.  The 1830 and 1840 U.S. Census shows the following information:

The 1850 U.S. Census gives a little more information.  Simeon is 61 and working as a Wheelwright doing miscellaneous repair services.  He is living with his wife, father-in-law, Justin Morton, and his son George Washington Reed and family.  George is working as a Broom Maker.  The property is wort $1,100.

Simeon died on August 28th, 1853 of Dysentery in Whately, MA.  He was listed as being a Wheelwright on his death certificate.  He is buried in Center Cemetery in Whately, MA.  


Note: There appears to be a second Simeon Reed serving as a musician in the War of 1812.  He was a member of Captain J. Cusing's Company, Lieut. Col. Town's Regiment and served abt the same time as our Simeon (September 8th until October 30th, 1814.  This company was raised in Abington, MA and also served in Boston.
